How to split chores fairly (without keeping score)

15 October 2026 · Fridge+ guides

Most arguments about housework aren't about the dishes. They're about feeling like you're the only one who notices what needs doing. Here's a calmer way to share the load.

1. Write everything down, including the invisible jobs

Spend ten minutes listing every recurring job in your home. Include the ones nobody sees: booking the dentist, remembering birthdays, noticing you're out of washing-up liquid, planning dinners. Those "thinking jobs" are often the heaviest part of the load.

2. Weigh the jobs, not just count them

Taking the bins out once a week isn't the same as cooking dinner every night. Give each job a rough size (small, medium, large) and how often it happens. Fairness is about the total, not the number of tasks.

3. Choose who owns what, not who helps

"Helping" still leaves one person in charge. Instead, give each job an owner who handles it from start to finish, including noticing when it's due. Some jobs work better as take-turns (weekly cleaning), and some as together jobs (the big shop).

4. Let reminders do the nagging

Put repeating jobs on a shared list with reminders, so nobody has to be the one who asks. Quiet hours matter too: nobody wants a bin reminder at 11pm.

5. Check in for ten minutes a week

Once a week, look at the list together. What went well? What slipped? Swap one thing if the balance feels off. Short, regular check-ins stop resentment building up.

Kids can help too

Children as young as three can tidy toys or feed a pet. Routines they can tick off themselves, with a star for each, make it feel like a game rather than a chore.
